Bean Seed Planting - Science and Growth

The children planted bean seeds in a clear plastic cup with just a tissue and water to make it germinate. That way we could observe the roots growing clearly. This week some Ruma Weta children helped Mr Bach replant the seedlings that had grown into pots, with compost, so we can plant them in the garden next year.

Weekly notices, week 9, term 1, 2017

Ruma Weta - Rooms 16 & 17, Weekly Notices, Term 1, Week 9 (27th - 31st March 2017)


  • We have swimming every day again with Henk this week, a qualified swim instructor and accomplished athlete. Week 8: Ruma Weta (Rooms 16 and 17) 11:00 - 12:20 every day.
  • These are the goggles that Henk has gathered throughout his lessons last week. They will be kept in room 15 until Monday 3pm and if not claimed will be in lost property.
  • Annunciation Liturgy - Tuesday 28th March, 10am in the hall.
  • J Rock is on this week, all children who signed up should have got a notice from Mrs Russell.
  • This week the year 0/1 children are holding a cake stall to help raise funds for their Big Day Out trip to the Mt rock pools.
  • This coming Sat, 1st April our Pasifika group will be performing at the annual Pasifika fun day  A great family event so do come and support if you can.  It is the first year that they have involved schools.

  • Life Education is on again this week also! Stay tuned! Berni Volschenk runs an inspiring and energetic workshop for our students. This is always popular with our classes! Room 16 is booked in for the first block on Thursday and Room 17 for the 2nd block on Friday

  • It is important that all visitors to the school sign in at the office on arrival. If visitors are going to class, they need a printed name tag from the office. Please also sign your children in at the office if they arrive late or sign them in and out if you are taking them out of school for any reason.
  • From Sylvia Dunkley: “Kapa Haka is on again this week at the usual time of 2 pm on Thursday. As in the past, the first 3 weeks are for anyone who would like to try out Kapa Haka with no obligation. In Week 11 I will give out notices for those children who wish to sign up for the year.
  • Friday 11am Pasifika Group and Band practice.
  • Gymnastics Wednesday and Thursday lunchtime in hall.
  • Please remind your child to bring their home reading back on Friday. Reading goes out Monday and back Friday and it must come in on Friday for a new set of books to be issued. Junior Journals are available from the Ruma Weta classroom for those children not on the programme. Ask if you need to know where to get one or exchange for a new one. Please let us know if we need some new books.

Da Vinci Bridge

 Anaia and Billie show off their Da Vinci bridge during the Rotorua Museum Da Vinci visit by Ruma Weta today. Mr Bach was absent on a science water testing resource course.

Weekly notices, week 8, term 1, 2017

Ruma Weta - Rooms 16 & 17, Weekly Notices, Term 1, Week 8 (20th - 24th March 2017)


  • We have swimming every day with Henk this week, a qualified swim instructor and accomplished athlete. Week 8: Ruma Weta (Rooms 16 and 17) 11:00 - 12:20 every day.
  • We have our St Joseph's Day Liturgy on Monday the 20th March, 10am in the hall - all welcome. This is a day we think about St Joseph, the man he was and the things he did. It is also to thank and celebrate Sister Carina and all she does in our school community.
  • We have our museum trip this week on Wednesday 22nd March 9:30-11:30 (Ruma Weta, rooms 16 & 17 together). Thanks to all who have offered to help supervise. We will be travelling by bus. Thanks to Rotorua Museum for supplying a free bus for us. As part of a science focus we will be looking at the amazing capabilities of Da Vinci and his designs, engineering, art and how this has helped communities and behaviour over time.
  • Life Education is with us this week also! Stay tuned! Berni Volschenk runs an inspiring and energetic workshop for our students. This is always popular with our classes! Room 16 is booked in for the first block on Thursday and Room 17 for the 2nd block on Friday (although we may mix the classes up depending what else Ruma Weta has to finish at the end of the week).

Butterfly Emerging from Chrysalis

While tidying the butterfly enclosure, Mr Bach and a few lucky Ruma Weta children got to see two butterflies emerging from their chrysalises. We managed to get one on video. It happens so quickly you have to be lucky to catch it.

Maths learning in Ruma Weta

We have begun our full maths programme in Ruma Weta. Not only are the children doing maths whizz and practice work from our team Google Site, but we have started sharing our strategies  during problem solving time in groups. We are also learning to use our special maths language.

WEEK 7 13th March-17th March 2017


  • Swimming with Henk a qualified swim instructor and accomplished athlete is with us this week and next. Week 7: Room 16 is at 9:00-9:45am on Wednesday 15th only and Room 17 is at 11:00-11:45am on Wednesday 16th only. In Week 8 Room 16 and 17 are swimming every day fro 11:00 - 12:30.
  • CARITAS -our Caritas study kicks off next week. We will be having a special visitor talking to the school about what andwhy Caritas exists and how and who benefits from Caritas efforts. CARITAS IN SCHOOLS
  • Ruma Weta are on ASSEMBLY this Friday!! Please do try to come along and see your child and their class explain to the school about some of the learning happening in Ruma Weta! Friday at 2:05pm in the school hall.

The Arts in Ruma Weta

Butterfly enclosure part 2

The Ruma Weta children have really enjoyed having the butterfly enclosure at the back of our classrooms and seeing the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly unfold before our eyes. But check out the new flash enclosure model in the senior area, by the hall, in the final photo below.

A very big thank you to you all for your generous support of our annual school gala!!

Also to those who were able to come and watch swimming sports-it was great to see you there.

The students have begun their focus on Lent in RE and are quite articulate at letting you know what it is all about.

Last week we managed to tag some real butterflies for our science/concept study. Now we have entered their details and will be able to track these butterflies and see where they go.
We will record this like real scientists!!


REMINDERS: SPELLING NOTEBOOKS BACK TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY, WE PRACTICE IN CLASS. ALSO FOR HOME READING BOOKS TO BE RETURNED EACH FRIDAY SO THEY CAN BE RE-STOCKED OVER THE WEEKEND FOR MONDAY. A LOT OF EFFORT GOES INTO THIS PROGRAMME SO PLEASE SUPPORT IT IF YOUR CHILD IS ON IT. THANKS.

CHANGE TO OUR SWIMMING TIME: WE ARE NOW SWIMMING IN WEEKS 7 AND 8. WE WILL BE HAVING INSTRUCTED LESSONS FROM HENK. A WELL QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED SWIMMING COACH.
